"When something arises such as pain, you might experiment with the following simple process to assist in seeing the truth. The first part is to move into an expanded reality, to come to see the totality of the moment instead of being limited to the pain. The second part is direct inquiry. Often the expansion is enough to shift into presence. The direct inquiry is helpful with deeper conditioning and pain.ExpansionIdentify the feeling, acknowledge that its there Find where it lives in the body as a sensation Stay with the actual sensation- Not thinking/analyzing/trying to understand- Not trying to change it or get rid of it Notice how the mind may try to avoid or move away from the sensation by going into thoughts about the sensation instead of feeling it.. Find the space around it - not as a way of moving away from the sensation but rather experiencing more of the totality of your experience. There is this sensation, and, there is an energy field in which it is arising, and, there is an awareness of the sensation.
- Activate the awareness of the energy field in the body as a felt sense
- Feel the parts of the body that are free of the sensation
- Feel the breath moving in and out of the body
- Sense the silent awareness that is aware of the sensation, the energy field as well as the breath Stay aware of all that this moment contains
- the space in which things are arising, the things that are arising such as thoughts, feelings, sensations, and the awareness of it all.

Finding the space around a sensation is to go beyond identification with the form. Going beyond identification with form is not just about no longer being identified with or as the body.It is to go beyond identification with all forms: thought forms, beliefs, reactions, emotions, pain."
