Shemsuddin is a long time dancer, musician, and supervised leader for the Dances of Universal Peace, and a mithrib for the Sufi practice of dzikr. He has had the great fortune of serving many dance circles, gifted teachers and dance leaders from around the globe. As he leads he listens through the experience of 21 years of musicianship, and 19 years of being a student in the Sufi Ruhaniat International.

The Dances of Universal Peace are a joyful, meditative, peaceful practice of sacred movement and chant, honoring the One reality through the attunement to the diversity of the world's faith traditions.

Live music and simple rhythmic movement assist our concentration on a sacred phrase, also called wazifa or mantram. The dances are designed to take us more and more into the universe of feeling and devotion. The heart center is the natural place to begin. As we chant and listen deeply, both to the other voices in the circle and within, the wazifa harmonizes and touches our being in deeper and deeper ways. We return to awareness of breath and silence between dances. It is our opportunity to hear what has been created and absorb the qualities evoked during the dance with our whole being.
